Online Programs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are the online classes the same as the in-house classes?
A: Some are the same as programs we hold at the Writers Corner USA, and many of those have the same instructors.  However, there are some big differences in the online classes.  You don’t have to drive to the Writers Corner USA.  You can take the lesson any time you want (it can be downloaded, printed or viewed online).  This allows you to participate at your own speed and according to your own schedule.

Q: How does the online classroom work?
A: Online classes are held as part of the Writers Corner USA website.  We create an online discussion group for each class (and all materials are restricted only to participating members).  Once your register you’ll receive an invitation to join the class and you get started once the first lesson is posted.

For most of the courses there will be a new lesson posted each week.  You read or download the lesson any time after it’s been posted.  Additional materials (suggestions for readings, notes, resources, etc.) will also be posted on the class group site.

With each lesson the instructor will post a writing assignment.  Once you complete this you’ll post it on the site for the instructor to read and evaluate.

Each class site will have a message forum allowing for communication and networking between students.

Many of the classes will also have a regular chat, which allows the students and teacher to interact in realtime.  Transcripts of these chats will be posted for anyone who can’t make it to the chatroom.

Q: Why should I take an online class with Writers Corner USA?
A: The WCUSA is owned and operated by professional writers and writing educators.  The teachers and staff are also writers.  Everyone associated with us is a published writer in one or more field, and that means you’re not just working with theory but from the actual practical and professional experience of the team.

Q: Do I get feedback on my writing?
A: Each lesson will be posted on a specific date, along with notes and homework.  Once you complete your writing assignments the instructor will read your work and provide personal evaluation.  All of our classes are based on a communication between instructor and participants.

Q: Is there a workshop component to the class?
A: Most of our classes have a true workshop component.  Aside from the feedback from the instructor, the students will be taught the process of critical analysis so they can discuss and usefully critique each other’s work.  This is a very effective learning process for writers.

Q: If I miss a posted lesson how do I catch up?
A: Lessons will remain posted for the entire length of the class, so if you miss one it’ll be there for you when you finally log back on.

Q: What if I miss a homework deadline?
A: All of our classes have an overlap between when assignments are posted and the cut-off date for posting completed work.  This will allow you to catch up if you miss the initial posting date for homework.

Q: Do I have to apply to get into an online class?
A: Some instructors require you to send a writing sample, but not all.  Many of our courses are for beginners.  Check the individual listings to see if a writing sample is required.

Q: What equipment do I need?
A
: A computer, Internet access and an open mind.
